Every year is is estimated that tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands of bats have been killed by flying into wind turbines. Migratory bats are for reasons unknown drawn towards the wind turbines when they usually would just stay in buildings or trees. New industry guidelines that will soon be announced plan for industries to turn down the turning speed of the windmills down during peak bat migratory time.
The process of slowing the blades down is known as feathering the blades. It is expected to possibly be the nation standard by Fall 2016 for all wind power companies. There are still some scientists who are not completely sure whether it will be effective or not. Due to the nocturnal habits of these bats it is often very hard to study them, but scientists are hopeful that it may somewhat help the bats.
The reason I chose this article is because the act of green power, especially wind, is something that interests me. I was also not aware of the danger it was posing to certain migratory animals. I am most interested in the fact that it seems a majority of the companies are willing to try and do something about it which is not something you see all the time. If more industries acted like that, the world would be much better off.
